Riding on your own bicycle in a foreign country makes for a very satisfying experience as it suddenly makes everything seem familiar. You are able to escape the tourist traps and keep your own momentum when traveling, and it provides the opportunity to get an insight into the lives of locals and relate better to your host country. In addition, you are able to make your own schedule, and follow where your nose guides you. Doing as the locals do, as a tourist you are greeted with a smile as they know you are not a threat, and rather a humble cyclist. It is the perfect way to connect the dots between the modes of transportation you would take on a holiday, ranging from trains, trams, buses, boats, taxis, to rickshaws. Though when traveling with a bike you may find yourself meandering of course, but I believe getting lost is part of the discovery of a place, you’ll see more and learn more first hand. Best of all, the airline does not charge extra to check in a folding bike. Just remember to bring a tool kit, puncture repair kit and pump!
